0T is parting out speakers really bad?

so i bought a pair of 816 VIs for 200$. the people who could have used them don't want them. (they're in complete denial of the huge dip from 100 to about 500 hz.) so now i don't know what to do with them. i really want to keep the 515 8ghps and sell the cabinets. but i would feel really bad about breaking up the speakers.

Well, it's not like they're super early models that spent their life undisturbed in the first theater invented by George Washington. You might have a hard time selling the cabinets, depending what the local market is like, or how willing you and the potential buyers are to ship. I'd buy them in a heart beat, if I wasn't in Michigan.

let's just say that line arrays with subwoofers lack that little something. like mid bass and vocals in this case. might be operator error. i will say that i noticed the head sound guy plays the keyboard,,, with headphones on. so obviously he has to be acutely aware of how the system sounds to the rest of us in the audience.

Well, it's not like they're super early models that spent their life undisturbed in the first theater invented my George Washington. considering i have 200$ in the whole thing, i could keep the 515s, give the cabinets away, and still be ahead. but still the thought of parting them out bothers me.

Then, leave them for the next guy. Neither he or i will have any qualms about parting out anything that benefits us in any way better than leaving the item whole.

I find the whole "sentimentality" concerning parting out audio goods rather ridiculous, the stuff unicorns and fairy dust are made of.

We even part out people today, check your organ donor card.

If people gave half as much consideration to good manners and a straight moral compass, we'd all be in a much better place.

I would object to parting out a set from the 1940's. Modern stuff, not so much.

Sad part is lots of old cabs became bonfires or were landfilled.

not so much sentimental, as much as a fuctional speaker. honestly those cabinet are most likely going on craigslist tonite. i just don't have the room for them.
or maybe ebay. but the last time they were ebay they only went for well,,, 200$ and that was with the speakers.

I'm all for doing your best to see things re-used and repurposed. Sometimes, time and location dictate that the supply has outpaced demand. In your neck of the woods you may well even turn them for money. Here, i couldn't give them away while at the same time i could probably find a better application for the 515's. Sound familiar?

I have to say I'm in the other camp on this especially WRT speaker systems like old Laguna's,605/604 speaker systems,old Vott systems,Capistrano's,19's, just some of the nice furniture grade and some of the old utility grade VOTT's as well.. But Hey there are plenty of JBL systems out there you can part out.

I'm in this camp too, with regard to parting out of old vintage ALTEC 's !



Phil not to worry.. The 816 cab is a utility cab that can have any number of different woofers in those cabs..Unlike a speaker system like a Model 19..Once a 19 is parted out it is gone forever..With a utility cab you can just throw another woofer in there and your good to go..

Certainly, good condition collectible speaker systems should be "no-brainers" for preservation to this crowd, and i'm sure we could pick nits all day long about what "good condition" is, and i'm sure several would argue the definition of "scarcity".

Model 19 systems are not rare, i have no qualms about parting examples that are beyond practical restoration. The cabinets are EASILY reproduced to a better than factory standard by a competent cabinet maker. In fact, i'd suggest that model 19 enjoys a status where a significant percentage of NEW ones are being parted together. It'll take a couple more generations to threaten their extinction.

Whenever parts value exceeds demand and scarcity with a liquid asset, you'll find me right between the dumpster and the bonfire cashing in.
